The Margaret Tullos Field Symposium is an annual Social Work educational training event in honor of former professor and field director in social work, Margaret Tullos.

Symposium Speakers

Maribeth Parker Bowman, LICSW-S

Maribeth Parker Bowman, LICSW-S is the Program Director and Forensic Interview Specialist at the Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center in Columbiana, Alabama. As a Forensic Interview Specialist, Maribeth has provided over 2000 forensic interviews for local, state, and federal level agencies. Maribeth also provides expert court testimony and professional consultation regarding child development, the dynamics of child abuse, and MDT investigations. Additionally, Maribeth facilitates the Shelby County Multidisciplinary Team and the Shelby County Child Death Review Team, and she serves on the Governor appointed Alabama State Child Death Review Team. As result of her innovative efforts, Maribeth has had the opportunity to present on local, national, and international levels regarding MDT coordination and training. Maribeth has the honor of serving on multiple teams and task forces in addition to coordinating her local forensic interviewer peer review group. Maribeth is also an Adjunct Instructor for The University of Alabama School of Social Work, where she provides instruction on human behavior and the social environment.

Paula Broome, JD

Paula Broome is the Director of Training for the Children’s Advocacy Centers of MS where she develops, coordinates and provides training and technical assistance to professionals on child abuse and other crimes against children as well as related topics such as mandatory reporting laws, joint investigations, protection of records involving children and courtroom testimony. Paula is also responsible for planning the annual One Loud Voice Conference, which is one of the largest multidisciplinary conferences on child abuse in the Southeast.

Paula retired from the MS Attorney General’s Office in 2021 after 17 years as a Special Assistant Attorney General, where she developed and conducted statewide training for various professionals on legal topics such as domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, crimes against children, report writing and courtroom testimony. Paula has also provided educational seminars both nationally and internationally for numerous groups and conferences. She serves as a faculty member for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Course, the ChildFirst course on forensic interviewing and the Interdiction for the Protection of Children course. She also serves on the MS Human Trafficking Council and the School Safety Alliance. Paula has both prosecution and civil litigation experience.

Sgt. Brad Jordan

Sgt. Brad Jordan has over 28 years of law enforcement experience, beginning his career at his alumnus, Auburn University. Sgt. Jordan has been employed with the Pelham Police Department for the past 15 years, where he currently supervises the Criminal Investigations Division and investigates all crimes against children. Sgt. Jordan also serves as a Tactical Field Officer for the FBI’s Human Trafficking Task Force and the Alabama Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce. Additionally, Sgt. Jordan is a member of the Shelby County Multidisciplinary Team, the Shelby County Child Death Review Team, and has been assigned Commander of the Shelby County Major Crimes Taskforce. Sgt. Jordan enjoys mentoring young detectives and provides training to law enforcement regarding investigative techniques, interviewing/interrogation, human trafficking, and internet facilitated exploitation.

Professor Emeritus of Social Work

The field symposium began in 2005 and was renamed in 2009 after Professor Emeritus of Social Work Margaret Tullos, who taught at Delta State from 1989 to 2008 and was the director of field education in social work. Previous symposium themes have included “Awareness, Advocacy, Action: What Will You Do with Your Seat at the Table?”; “Enhancing Social Justice through Rural Initiatives”; and “Youth and Family Advocacy.” Previous keynote speakers have included Kathryn Boles, president and CEO of Valley Area Agency on Aging; Trina George, Mississippi director of United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development; and William Bell, president and chief executive officer of Casey Family Programs serving foster care.
