Master of Education in Elementary Education

The Master of Education degree in Elementary Education program is designed to prepare quality teachers who possess the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that enable them to deliver effective instruction at all levels of the elementary school.

Course content and practical learning experiences are balanced so that the educator receiving the degree has sound knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings of all facets of elementary education as well as the pedagogy that characterizes master elementary teachers.

You can now earn your Master of Education in Elementary Education degree in one year. Candidates will focus on one class at a time during the spring and fall semesters and will engage in two courses simultaneously during the summer sessions.

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an institution fully accredited by one of the recognized accrediting agencies.
  2. Overall undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of a minimum of 2.5, or 2.75 on the last 64 hours of required coursework.
  3. Class A teaching certificate or its equivalent.
  4. Satisfactory score on one of the nationally recognized, standardized test of verbal skills listed below:
    a. CORE Academic Skills for Educators: Writing (Test #5723)-minimum score of 162
    b. Praxis I Writing Test- minimum score of 174 on PPST or 320 on CBT
    c. National Teacher Examination (NTE) Communication Skills- minimum score of 653
    d. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Verbal Test- minimum score of 370 (Old Scale) or 144 (New Scale)
    e. Miller Analogies Test (MAT)- minimum score of 30
    f. Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) Writing Essay Test- minimum score of 3
  5. Evidence of a passing score on PRAXIS II, Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment (K-5), or Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment (4-8); or passing score on test in Elementary Education approved by Mississippi State Department of Education.
  6. Evidence of a passing score on the Foundations of Reading test for those seeking elementary endorsement for the first time.

How to Apply for Graduation

Use the online application process to apply for graduation at least one semester prior to the semester of graduation. Paper applications are no longer accepted.  Complete the process by going to the Registrar’s Office webpage.

Graduate students must have completed at least 18 earned credit hours (not including the current semester) in order to apply for graduation.

Degree Requirements:
1. Fulfill the general requirements for a graduate degree at Delta State University;
2. Complete graduate work consisting of core courses, major field hours and elective hours as specified. At least one half of major field courses must be at 600-level or higher;
3. Earn a grade point average of at least 3.0 in the major field and overall;
4. Earn a B average on the education core courses (ELR 605, EPY 601, and CUR 608);
5. Pass an oral and/or written examination in the candidate’s major field administered by a committee appointed by the division chair;
6. Optional. With the consent of the advisor, a candidate may elect to write a thesis for 6 semester hours credit in the major field.

This program prepares students to apply for applicable licensure and/or certification examinations in the state of Mississippi.
